Thumbs Up!

"Well, that pile of boxes wasn't so stable - but we don't get points for style"

Trine is definitely something different. You could dismiss it as an old school 2D platformer with a lot of shiny bits, but the physics-based gameplay elements and the fact that you can solve problems in so many different ways makes it so enjoyable. Sure, one may complain that as a puzzle game, it is too easy and as the difficulty levels do not adjust the puzzle aspect in any way, there is nothing you can do about it. The only added challenge comes from hunting hidden areas and experience vials.

Personally I found the difficulty level to ultimately be acceptable. The puzzle element was always there, requiring you to figure out ways to advance, yet the flow of the game never suffered. Instead of stopping to think how to proceed, you can just wing it on the fly and concentrate more on style and smoothness of execution. Only when hunting for those last few secrets in each level you have to start pondering for real and you'll probably do that only after completing the whole game once.

So, is Trine then too short? In my opinion, no - it offers just enough levels without getting too repetitive and achievements push you for a second round to hunt down all the hidden bits you missed. Sure, smooth gameplay flowing through levels without any major roadblocks on the way translates to a game that can be completed in 5-6 hours, but in this case I don't think it is more than a minor downside. Importantly, Trine manages to stay fresh and entertaining all the way and it plays so well that it is hard to stop. A quick first try can stretch into a non-stop session that ends only as you complete the game, the sun is coming up and you notice that it is 5AM or something - last time that happened to me was with Portal. Such experiences are rare and at the new $20 price point on Steam is more than a fair trade for what Trine offers. Even if it doesn't quite qualify as a classic, I'd advise you not to miss it.

Scores

Gameplay 87 Incredible mix of physics-based puzzles and old school platformer action. Only crimes of note are the bit casual difficulty level and limited replayability.
Graphics 93 Incredible art combined with plenty of nice effects - effectively a fantasy book that is alive and moving. Bonus points for great animation.
Audio 91 Professional voice acting and superb background music.
Technology 89 Polished, bug-free and scales well across wide range of systems without looking horrible at the low end.
OVERALL

Trine proves that if you have an original mix of ideas, even old school gameplay can still work great, especially when paired with incredible visuals and extremely polished code. So, it is a bit short and lacks long-term replayability and gets scored accordingly, but don't let that stop you - Trine is definitely something special.
