An armada of new features to keep us going

Whilst the new quests and areas are interesting on their own, the addition of hordes of new enemies and items are a must for a RPG expansion. Fortunately, Shivering Isles doesn't disappoint in this aspect; in fact it fixes one of the biggest issues I had with Oblivion - the lack of distinct unique weaponry and armour. A huge variety of items can be found, crafted, earned or bought, most of which can be used over in Cyrodiil as well. The new items are interesting and most of them definitely fit in well with the items from the regular game, in terms of how powerful they are, and hence the balance of the game is kept intact bar the odd, "too powerful" exception. One won't be seeing too many of the foes known from Cyrodiil in the mad god's realm though, as there a lot of new, vicious enemies during the adventures; some of the monsters seem a bit more mobile and aggressive than their counterparts from Oblivion, making some of the fights more of a challenge.

The scenery is breathtaking; the vivid colours coupled with the crisp textures and interesting vegetation prolong the longevity of the game considerably...
...since you will be spending a lot of time just walking around and enjoying the beauty that this realm offers.

The voice-acting in the main game is exceptionally good through the main quests, although weak with generic NPCs - the more linear approach of the expansion pack improves on this a little, as the player is mostly surrounded by unique characters. Whilst Sheogorath can be slightly annoying at times with all the nonsense he says, he can also be a very loveable character and Haskill's dark, sarcastic comments add a lot to the game; especially since one can receive a spell that allows you to summon him any time you need his council, something that he is not too fond of giving.

Graphically, the game is just as overwhelming as Oblivion but there aren't any real changes, besides in the artistic direction that changed from "epic fantasy" to "madness". The scenery is gorgeous and reflects the general state of mind on the Isles, with its twisted trees and colourful sky. The new creatures are all very detailed and blend in well with the environment, and most of them are highly memorable with greatly different attributes and behaviours.

You will meet a lot of new characters, some of whom can provide us with all kinds of magical weaponry and armour.

Not all bugs are insects

It should be mentioned that the release version of the expansion pack has a serious, fatal bug; one which can cause the loss of items as time progresses, completely breaking the game. High-end computers are more affected than those struggling to run the game - internally the game creates reference IDs for all newly generated items and as time progresses (depending on the FPS achieved by the player's PC), it can make new IDs too quickly. Once it reaches the maximum value, any more additional items start disappearing and it can also lead to serious crashes.
