Hell or Heaven?

Toasty flamethrower - one of the best examples of such a weapon in a game.

Infernal is bit of an oddball game. The gameplay concepts are not that dissimilar to a wide array of critically acclaimed titles such as Half-Life, Max Payne or Deus Ex, but I guess today we expect a bit more than artificially limited obstacle courses, no matter how well you shiny up the looks. Shortcomings in details such as cutscene animations, voice acting and script don't exactly help, and while Infernal would have been considered a fine title in the past, these days the bar is just so much higher that it leaves Infernal in the hell reserved for mediocrity.

On the upside Infernal is well-polished, bug-free and smooth to play - even on a slightly older system - and the visuals are good. If you consider that this is a game from a small and fairly unknown Polish development team, it could be much worse. Might be still worth taking a look, at least once you find it in the discount bin.

A jetpack? Damn, good guys get all the neat toys
Welding Gun, when you absolutely positively need to melt the guy.

Scores

Gameplay 71 Just your average shooter with some supernatural abilities tossed in for extra taste. Sacrifices realism in the name of gameplay but overall the package works fairly well - there just isn't that much to see in terms of amount of content or originality.
Graphics 85 Looks good and employs tons of effects candy. Texture quality varies, but it's generally acceptable and the physics effects work as advertised.
Audio 63 Voice acting ranges from passable to outright horrible, and the weak B-grade plot that is carried by the acting sure does not help. Music and effects are mediocre.
Technology 82 Technologically fairly polished, with a (limited) PhysX hardware support as a bonus, but it doesn't really present anything new. Most of the technology used is already old but on the upside, everything Just Works™ without any visible bugs or crashes.
OVERALL
69
A generic shooter that will keep you entertained for a few days. The general story concept of a clash between the forces of good and evil is fine, but the actual plot is full of holes. Abuses some annoying design conventions from the past and doesn't even bother to innovate - decisively average and far too short.
