So how about that nice game of chess?

Once again Introversion software have gone down a slightly different route for gaming, and again it has succeeded very well. Granted, the idea isn't unique, since it has been taken straight out of the WarGames film, but if you're like me and have been waiting for this to come to our home PCs to experience yourself, you will not be disappointed. Another bonus is that the game isn't system intensive, so even your grandma on her aging antique of a computer could join in... if she, scarily, would like to. Chess is nothing compared to this!

Scores

Gameplay 86 A simple game for any gamer to jump in and play, while also allowing more tactical and intensive battles to take place for the advanced of gamers.
Graphics 81 It's not photo-realistic, but does throw you right back to how the super-high tech displays were envisioned in the early 1980's with the neon-style glow like TRON!
Audio 79 The music changes with the heat of the battle, supplying the perfect track with what is going on screen. The additional sound effects and nursery rhymes plinking through the war add that depth of eeriness and supplies guilt to what you are actually doing in the game!
Technology 97 The engine scales brilliantly over a massive range of hardware, thanks to the engine not being graphically intensive. You thankfully don't need a powerhouse system to completely enjoy this game.

DEFCON certainly puts Introversion squarely on the map, and rightly so - this game should appeal to any RTS addict but also allow the beginners to join in and have a great time! At such a great price too, this is a top class game that should not be missed!

2nd Opinion

As somebody who can clearly remember government information films of the 1980s ("Duck and Cover" anyone?), this brought back some pretty stark memories. The instruction booklet is very much tongue-in-cheek but younger readers might be shocked to realise that a lot of the contents was genuine guidance from the people in power, for what one must do in a global thermonuclear conflict. And yes, that meant putting a mattress on top of your head - they're well known for their resistance to plutonium fallout, you know.

Anyway, DEFCON is more than just nostalgia; it's an example of near-perfect video gaming. Gameplay that offers depth and simplicity in equal measure; addictiveness that lines of Charlie can only hope to have. There's no gore, no guts, no glorification - it's as pure as chess, checkers or, indeed, tic-tac-toe (see the WarGames film to appreciate that bit). DEFCON is perhaps not something that can be repeatedly enjoyed, day after day, but everything about it (hardware requirements, price, disk space) makes it great for a sneaky blast at work or a rainy Sunday.

There's a whole host of brilliant little mods (of which, both the game and the developers fully support) that add new forms of gameplay, graphics, locations (how about space?!) and maps of Earth. Finding a like-minded person to play against is very easy and far less intimidating than many multiplayer games.

You owe it to yourself to have DEFCON.

Patches & Updates

There have been a couple of patches released for this game. Some have fixed some exploits that other people have found, while others have allowed the additions of mods to be applied to the game; allowing the look and feel to be completely transformed. As usual, we recommend patching to the latest version of the game to receive the best experience and lack of exploits found possible.
