Wayne Holden, our accidental hero

Capcom's Lost Planet: Extreme Condition turned out to be a fairly popular shooter when it was published on the Xbox 360 last year. To me it's popularity was a bit of a puzzle as the title never caught my interest on the consoles. Fast forward six months, and the same game is now available on the PC and it supports DirectX 10. That feature alone means Lost Planet is worthy of a second look.

The story concept is very much Japanese - a mix of science fiction and high drama. Man colonized the world of E.D.N. III, but got their asses kicked by the original inhabitants, the Akrid. The main character, Wayne Holden, is found frozen in his VS suit by a band of Snow Pirates - colonists left behind after the general evacuation. Wayne can't remember much about his past, except that he was in a fight with a huge Akrid known as Green Eye before the evacuation. The story also dwells into the past of the barren icy world and involves competing bands of Snow Pirates, mysterious organization known as NEVEC, plans for terraforming the planet, and there are bugs - lots of bugs.

Gameplay Footage

Is this going to be a stand-up fight, sir, or another bug hunt?

While the story has some originality, the gameplay is fairly conventional. Wayne will travel around varied locations of planet E.D.N.III blasting away various Akrid bugs and Snow Pirates. Locations appear initially to be fairly open, but in reality advancement is limited to strict pre-defined paths. Player-activated beacons dot the landscape and act as waypoints. Progress is automatically stored up to the last visited beacon, with the caveat that the game situation is not actually saved to disk until you quit the game to the main menu. This also means that saves are tied to profiles and you have only one save slot per user.

My, that's a big bug! (8800GTX, DX10)

Most of the time the action is viewed from a third person camera, but you can zoom into first person view. Either way there is a crosshair to aim your weapon. Balancing feels like it's designed for the pad - things just feel clumsy, slow and inaccurate, even with a mouse. Combat against the planet's native population is mostly about figuring out how to land shots at the soft spot of each type of bug encountered. The Snow Pirates present a bit more varied opposition, but the terrible AI turn things into a turkey shoot. In many cases an enemy might be standing in plain view just waiting to be shot, reacting only after player has opened fire - and it's usually far too late at that point. Enemies also generally just shoot and stand where they, or advance very slowly towards the player. This works fine if you slowly try to aim each target with a joypad, but it looks fairly silly if you are picking them off rapidly with a mouse.
