Massive battles on not so massive hardware

Medium settings, playable on most systems
Everything turned to maximum - yes, there is extra detail, but the differences are minor.

Medieval II: Total War plays surprisingly well even on a system near the manufacturer's minimum configuration. Since it is a strategy game, frame rate is far less important than in other genres, and while you do lose some of the eye candy, the main point of massive armies clashing on the battlefield is intact even on a fairly low end system, and the difference is far less noticeable than usual.

When actually playing, there is almost no noticeable difference in detail.

Yes, you lose some texture resolution and minor details on the terrain, but essentially it looks the same even on lesser setups. And to be honest, you won't be playing the game looking at your troops at this level - most of the time your camera will be positioned way above the battlefield, where such slight detail differences won't really show. All that really matters is that you can tell apart your different unit types, and as long as your monitor supports 1280x1024 resolution or higher, there is no problems with toned down graphics settings - all you lose is bit of excess eye candy.

The only time when you might see performance issues on the YouGamers minimum setup at medium graphics settings is when you end up fighting in massive cities with lots of buildings - and even there you can combat the issue by reducing the level of detail on the buildings without any major loss of image quality.

Extra credit for complete support for play on widescreen monitors must be given to Creative Assembly!

No online wars - just single battles

Medieval II: Total War includes online play, but it's sadly limited to individual battles, as the Grand Campaing can only be played in single player mode. You can play against your opponent in Custom Battles, where you can customize the armies of each side and the battlefield in great detail, or select one of the included Balanced Battles, which are essentially pre-defined custom battles with balanced armies and battlefields. Or you can take on your friend in one of the famous Historic Battles. Broadband or LAN connection is a requirement for online battles.
