Good and simple fun

Attack on Pearl Harbor is good old-fashioned arcade style fun: instantly playable, very polished and reasonably pretty. It's also priced cheaper than the usual full-price PC titles. The only real problem is that you will run out of content far too soon. I was happily blasting evil American imperialists, sinking their ships and dropping their planes from the sky all afternoon, only to end up staring at the final comic book pages after only about three or four hours. The US campaign is similar in length, and you actually fight in many of the same locations, just on the other side, so all in all there is less than ten hours of gameplay here. Scoring and medals are also very basic, and there are no real hooks to encourage replay. Attack on Pearl Harbor is still reasonable value for money due to the cheaper than usual price tag, but one can't ignore the fact that there is just a bit too little content here to avoid feeling underwhelmed when it's all over. Still, a fairly fun arcade shooter for as long as the entertainment lasts.

Admiring the results of a successful torpedo attack.
As a nice touch, bullets actually leave holes on your plane.

Scores

To learn more about our scoring methodology, please click here.

Gameplay 84 Easy to just pick up and play, well laid out default controls and very playable arcade-style gameplay. Sadly lacks a bit in the depth and longevity departments.
Graphics 83 Doesn't really push the envelope, but the visuals do their job admirably. Some of the visual effects such as clouds and the weather are surprisingly good.
Audio 75 Effects are passable, but the grand soundtrack playing in the background gets very repetitive over time.
Technology 83 Runs acceptably on pretty low spec hardware, but there isn't that much extra stuff to turn on with more modern hardware. Polished and stable.
OVERALL
78
Not a bad arcade shooter for the casual crowd. Yes, it's tad short and repetitive, and lacking a bit on the storyline and mission design, but still good fun for a while. Just don't confuse this for a real flight simulator.

2nd Opinion

At first, I didn't know what to make of this game. This was due to the comic strip cutscenes, used throughout the game to tell the "story" (like it really needs telling!); having been overwhelmed by the vast number of serious WWII games and flight sims on the PC, it came as quite a shock to find something so blatently... well.. fun! Attack on Pearl Harbor really is about just having a ball and everything is kept as simple as possible to ensure that this remains true: from the limited flight controls through to the basic multiplayer modes. It won't keep you going for long but if you just think of it as something to liven up a rainy day, you'll thoroughly enjoy it.
