Review: Legend of Grimrock

I'm not entirely sure where all the dungeon crawlers vanished... I guess all the advances in 3D graphics drove developers into dreaming of bigger things. Almost Human, a small Finnish indie team formed by a couple of ex-Futuremark and ex-Remedy developers seems to think that a modern dungeon crawler would be a fun game to play and I happen to agree with them. Those who are too young to remember Dungeon Master may be slightly confused, yet they should probably take notice - Legend of Grimrock is unlike any other recent game and sometimes old ideas really are worthy of resurrecting.

Review: Alan Wake

Alan Wake is a heavily story-driven third-person horror/mystery adventure-shooter that lingered almost two years in console exclusivity limbo before finally appearing on the PC. It tells a story about a writer who gets mixed with supernatural forces, paying homage to works of Stephen King and to the classic TV series "Twin Peaks". Developed by Remedy, the PC version comes with a set of expectations - so, is it a proper PC game or just another two-bit console port?

Preview: Star Wars: The Old Republic First Look

It is almost time for the first serious contender in the subscription-based MMO market in years - Star Wars: The Old Republic. But does it have what it takes to pry some people away from World of Warcraft or get new players into a subscription-based MMO? I took a stab at the game with the recent large scale stress test weekend and while a full review has to wait until I can say something about the endgame of SWTOR, here is a preview on what to expect from the game initially.

Review: Battlefield 3

Some games act as signposts for future game development - they set new standards in visuals or gameplay in a way that instantly obsoletes all games made to meet the old standards. Battlefield 3 is one of those games - featuring DICE's new Frostbite 2 engine and superb character animation system transplanted from EA sports titles, it completely redefines the expected level in visual realism and does it with the PC and DirectX 11 as the lead platform for engine development. The age of DirectX 9 is finally over.

Review: Deus Ex Human Revolution

Deus Ex Human Revolution has some pretty big boots to fill - could Eidos Montreal do something with the franchise that would do justice to the classic Deus Ex and do it without getting burned at the stake by PC gamers for making yet another crappy console game? Well, sometimes old classics do manage to find the right development team that understands the material and builds on it instead of just plundering it for a well-known name - Deus Ex Human Revolution works as a good example.

Review: Space Pirates and Zombies

Sometimes indie game developers just go and make a game they want to play, even if the genre is old and nobody thinks it would sell today. Space Pirates and Zombies is one of those games. Top-down, 2D space combat with RPG elements and exploration. Not a three-dimensional object in sight. I like the concept, but I am an old geezer that grew up playing games like Star Control. If you think you also don't necessarily need the latest tessellated shiny to enjoy some solid gameplay, read on...

Duke Nukem Forever - in development hell for over a decade, thought to be forever lost when 3D Realms ran out of money with an unfinished game on hand. Yet you can't keep Duke down so easily. Finally, with the co-operation of 3D Realms, Triptych Games, Piranha Games and Gearbox Software, Duke Nukem is back, ready to blast the alien scum that is stealing our chicks. Again.

It is that time of the year again as E3 is upon us. Between June 7th and June 9th, every publisher, big and small, will be touting their shiny things and unveiling new games for the upcoming holiday season. If it is going to be out in 2011, we'll see and hear about it this week at E3 2011.

This year it looks like PC gaming is again classified as "not dead" and we may get some big announcements. In any case we'll collect the important PC-related news, screenshots, trailers and gameplay videos here in one easy-to-digest compilation of E3 news.

Review: Portal 2

Sometimes a daring game design experiment turns out to be a surprise hit. Valve's Portal was one of those rare gems. Then comes the hard part - a big-budget full-blown sequel that somehow captures the magic of the original, extends the gameplay with new elements and provides new challenges for the fans of the first game. Well, managing to do two out of three ain't bad, right? In any case, it is once again time to think with portals.

Review: Bulletstorm

Epic Games is these days known mostly for Gears of War series that seems to have fatal Microsoft-driven issues preventing PC ports. Tired of waiting for Gears 3 on the PC? Bulletstorm is the game for you - a manly cover-based shooter co-developed by Epic and People Can Fly. It shares the basic gameplay mechanics of Gears of War while staying firmly first-person and spicing the whole thing with silly but fun "skillshot" system that awards points for extreme cruelty and unkindness towards the opposition. It is time to "Kill With Skill".

Review: Cities In Motion

I'm sure it is not uncommon to think that the local public transport system is obviously designed by monkeys with no clue as routes seem illogical, timetables are a joke and the bus is always late. Surely there is plenty of room for improvement. Luckily you can now prove that you could do better as Cities in Motion allows you to try your skills as a director of a company running the public transport system of a major metropolitan area. I mean, how hard can it be?

Review: Magicka

Ever thought that games simplify spellcasting too much? I mean, press a button to cast a fireball? Why not have a way of building that spell from components? Conjure a rock, apply fire, launch at the enemy and... boom. Magicka builds on this simple idea - a small indie game that allows you to experiment with ridiculous number of different spell combos in order to demolish hordes of generic fantasy enemies. Epic!

World of Warcraft got the latest box of expansion goodies just before the holidays and as Deathwing ripped up the world, even the old lands got a serious makeover with all new low level content. Cataclysm is what everyone expects, more World of Warcraft, but if you are an ex-player wondering how things are now in Azeroth and if you should resubscribe, we have an in-depth look at the new expansion.

Review: Blood Bowl: Legendary Edition

Blood Bowl is a famous board game played with Games Workshop miniatures and has been distilled over two decades and multiple editions to a superb strategy game. Cyanide took a stab at a modern computerized adaptation of the game in 2009 but the initial version got panned hard due to a limited set of teams, bugs and missing features. Opting to go for a full sequel, Blood Bowl: Legendary Edition is set to mend those shortcomings, sporting 11 new teams and a whole host of fixes and improvements. Do we finally have a computerized Blood Bowl worthy of the original board game?

Review: Civilization V

Always dreamed of world domination? Wished you could be the enlightened leader that unites the squabbling world towards a common cause? Well, in the real world there are some practical problems interfering with such plans, but theoretical what-if scenarios are prime fodder for games and Civilization is probably the most practical way to see if you have what it takes to rule the world. The long-running series has now reached the 5th iteration on the PC and while shiny new visuals are a given, how do you improve over a classic like Civilization IV?

Mafia was the more serious and mature cousin of Grand Theft Auto III. The long-awaited sequel is finally here and we take a look at the life as part of organized crime in the 40s and the 50s. "Crime does not pay", they say. In Mafia 2, I guess it depends on how you assign value to friends and innocent lives in the final cost-benefit analysis and in hindsight all that power and money does come with strings attached. We also take a look at Jimmy's Vendetta, the first piece of additional downloadable content.

James "Jim" Raynor is back and the epic story continues in Starcraft II: Wings of Liberty - it is time to roast some Zerg again.

You may have noticed that the recent Prince of Persia movie has drawn in respectable crowds to the movie theaters. UbiSoft wouldn't miss the chance to capitalize on the movie release and came up with Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands. So far the sequels to The Sands of Time have all failed to live up to the masterpiece and this time UbiSoft has reportedly gone back to the roots - is Forgotten Sands a worthy sequel or just a movie tie-in rush job?
