Say you've got a favorite pizza place – a local joint that makes the Italian pies just the way you love them. Let's call this place Blizzard Bistro, and their delicious pie the Diablo Deep-Dish. But what if you've been ordering the same large Diablo Deep-Dish every weekend for over a decade? Making matters worse, what if the crafty chefs at Blizzard Bistro have moved on to a new signature dish? The stagnant Diablo Deep-Dish is in desperate need of an update, but with all of Blizzard Bistro busy serving up their new WoW calzone, who will rejigger the recipe? How about some Blizzard Bistro chefs who've opened up a new eatery (let's call it Flagship Café) across the street? Surely the cooks at Flagship Café can come up with a new recipe which keeps the best flavors of the old dish while rolling in some contemporary style. Their new dish? The Hellgate hero.

Thinly veiled (and possibly groan-inducing) restaurant analogy aside, Flagship Studios is opening their development menu with an ambitious title that's part single-player Roguelike, part MMO and part online co-op RPG. With comparisons to the wildly successful Diablo series (Flagship's owners are founders and ex-employees of Diablo creator Blizzard Entertainment), Hellgate: London was first previewed over two years ago. Since that time, the game has expanded in scope, but not without some confusion.

Diablo For a New Generation

So what exactly is Hellgate: London? First and foremost, it's a single-player RPG experience told from a first-person view. Think Diablo born again in the new millennium, combining FPS gameplay mechanics with role-playing character progression elements. RPG staples such as loot collection, a weapon upgrade system and plenty of wanton combat are here. Additionally, enemies are randomly placed and some dungeons randomly generated, adding to the replay value and making repeat exploration worthwhile. Fighting promises to be fast-paced and brutal, based on a unique moddable weapon system.
