If you're a PC gamer, 2007 has been kind to you, particularly if you're a fan of first-person shooters. Publishers turned on the spigot and let loose a veritable deluge of run-and-gun titles. S.T.A.L.K.E.R., Lost Planet, Bioshock, Gears of War for Windows, Call of Duty 4, Half-Life 2: Episode 2 – these are just a few of the games which comprise the teetering tower of FPS games on my desk (a PC gamer's version of Jenga?). Despite an FPS release schedule stacked with excellence, one game has consistently garnered more pre-release attention than the rest of the field. Crytek's Crysis has been teasing us for many months with screenshots and gameplay footage so gorgeous that grown men have been known to tear up in awe – if not for the game itself, then for the cost of the hardware required to run the game. Awe-inspiring visuals and hefty system requirements aside, Crytek also promised an engaging story and innovative gameplay; in other words, a complete and outstanding FPS package. The FPS package, if you will.

Looking Great - Playing Well?

It's tempting to wax philosophical and begin a discussion of narrative and exposition, but let's follow the Gamer's Anonymous credo and lay our cards on the table: it's the visuals and fast-action we're after in Crysis. For months, gaming forums' "For Sale" sections have been lit up by would-be Crysis players selling off all but the bare essentials, from components to cars to children. The fundraising effort hasn't been for naught: the game's anticipated steep hardware requirements have morphed into almost unfathomable upon release. But for many, the sacrifice is worth it. In the mind of the hardcore gamer, weighing the opportunity cost of a few weeks' worth of food versus the hardware necessary to run Crysis is an instinctive decision. If you're on a budget, however, does the game still qualify as a "must-by" to satiate your early winter gaming fix?

It's cold, and there's something coming up the stairs. That's all your getting without spoilers.
