I'm on a mission but not from God.

The battle between Good and Evil has always been a ripe starting point for epic storylines, but Infernal takes things a bit more literally, and sets the player character as a fallen angel doing legwork for the guy downstairs. Our anti-hero, Ryan Lennox used to work for Etherlight - the earthly arm of the heavenly powers - but ends up swapping sides in a fairly convoluted story where his goal is to stop the "good guys" from going a bit too far in their quest to rid the world of all evil; "the balance of good and evil must be maintained", as always.

It's good to be bad and in Infernal our hero is definitely a bad guy, busy fixing up things - mostly by blowing them away with a familiar selection of guns and some demonic superpowers. In practice the gameplay is familiar from dozens of similar first person shooters, with the small exception that Infernal is actually a third-person shooter, viewed over the shoulder of the main character, similar to the Max Payne series. Beyond that, the gameplay is all very familiar. In general there is only one path to advance and to progress the player must figure out different kind of puzzles and leave behind the usual trail of dead bodies.

You won't be needing that soul any more...
Subtlety is overrated and the other side is pretty heavily armed for a bunch of religious people.

Except in Infernal you don't actually leave the bodies behind - that would be a terrible waste. There is a distinct lack of health packs, so Lennox replenishes his health by sucking up the souls from dead bodies, which causes them to dissolve into thin air. This doubles as a quick pat-down of the corpse for any guns, ammo or keycards. Since every enemy you meet is a fresh "health pack" to be drained dry, it's fairly easy to stay topped up. Ammo is sometimes bit harder to come by, and you will end up using all of the different guns in different situations. While the concept of sucking up the souls of your enemies works, rummaging through the piles of corpses tends to interrupt the action constantly.
