Video game development is a fleeting business with few real visionaries and even fewer success stories. To that end, there are those who create brands, and those who become them. Sid Meier falls into the latter category. In an industry rife with posers and snake-oil salesman, the venerable designer can be considered a cornerstone. With a trail of successful simulations dating back to the early 1980's, Meier is best known for his Civilization games. Civilization IV, developed by Firaxis and published by 2K Games, is the latest incarnation of the turn-based strategy series. Does Civilization IV carry on the successful legacy handed down from previous Civilization titles, or is the franchise finally showing its age?

Meier himself hasn't taken a primary design role since the first Civilization (released in 1991), but the series which carries his name has continued to be a success. Firaxis, the company Meier co-founded with former Microprose cohort Jeff Briggs, has developed every Sid Meier-branded title since its inception in 1996. From small-scale simulation (SimGolf) to planet colonization (Alpha Centauri), Firaxis has captured a variety of subjects in their PC simulations. But it's the Civilization series which continues to impress fans and critics alike. Even the onslaught of real-time strategy games over the past decade has yet to chip away at the turn-based stalwart's popularity.

A typical round of Civilization IV begins in the Stone Age and progresses through the millennia to one of six victory conditions, from a dominating Conquest Victory to a more mundane Diplomatic Victory. Players - both human and AI - take turns moving units, attacking, building structures, and conducting research. After a player's available moves have been exhausted, the turn is passed to the next player. In contrast to the sea of über-fast RTS games, the turn-based gameplay is a throwback to an era of board games. But where Civilization IV lacks the sex appeal of a twitchy RTS, it is steeped in minutiae and tactics. Achieving victory is more about intelligent and well-planned strategy and less about a rush to build the most devastating military unit.
